In the beginning of Dr. Granese's 15 years of practicing psychiatry in California, it became evident that Orange County was an underserved area for psychiatry. Over 3 million in population with a mere double-digit list of psychiatrists seemed an alarming disparity. Unfortunately, in the past 10 years, there has been little accomplished to broaden patient access to critically needed psychiatric care in Orange County, California and across the U.S.

Dr. Granese has dedicated significant time over the past 15 years attempting to affect change within private practice, hospital settings, organized psychiatry, psychiatry education, and California state legislation in order to increase patient access to psychiatric care. Minimal change has occurred through these obvious channels and so the idea of a "grass roots" effort came in the formation of The Granese Foundation. It is the sincere hope of our foundation to provide avenues for like-minded individuals and organizations that share our desire to help those who are in need of psychiatric care. Without access to care, those in need would be left without treatment.

Lori Kelly Granese, PHD
Secretary and Chief Financial Officer

Dr. Kelly Granese received a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics from Marshall University where she also completed graduate work. Most recently she completed a Doctorate in Health Sciences with an emphasis in nutrition and wellness. Prior to moving to Orange County, California in 2005, her work included 2 years of post-graduate laboratory research and nearly a decade in the pharmaceutical industry working directly with psychiatric medications.

In the past 15 years Dr. Kelly Granese has been involved with direct patient care for those suffering from mental illness and/or substance use disorders. As the Chief Operating Officer for Southern CA Psychiatric Associates (SCPA), Inc. for 11 years, she gained invaluable insight into real problems faced by patients as they attempted to access the full range of psychiatric care. From outpatient medication management, acute inpatient hospitalization, psychotherapy, substance use disorder treatment, sober living and prescription medication attainment, she helped patients and their families navigate cumbersome roadblocks to access the care they needed. Unfortunately, due to severe managed care restrictions and changes, SCPA, Inc. was unable to support increasing costs which forced its closing in December 2017. This closing further exasperated the lack of access to quality psychiatric care in Orange County, CA.

During the subsequent years, Dr. Kelly Granese took a role as the Director of Integrative Wellness at A Mission for Michael, a mental health and addiction treatment center, utilizing her education to introduce a holistic approach to the treatment of mental illness. This approach looked at underlying diagnosis, such as a nutritional imbalance or chronic infection that may lead to symptoms of behavioral, neurological and psychiatric disorders. Most recently, stepping away from patient care, she has taken on the very important role of primary educator to her adolescent son. Observing deficits in the educational system she has made a commitment through 2021 to home schooling in order to provide a successful path into high school and beyond. It is her sincere hope that their children will pursue careers in mental healthcare and be called to continue this service endeavor to eliminate the access to psychiatric care crisis.
